George H. W. Bush was the 43rd vice president of the United States during the presidency of Ronald Reagan from January 20, 1981, to January 20, 1989. Bush, a member of the Republican Party who previously served in various other federal positions, was selected as Reagan's running mate and took office following their victory in the 1980 presidential election over Democratic incumbent president Jimmy Carter and vice president Walter Mondale. Four years later, in the 1984 presidential election, they defeated Democratic nominees, Mondale and Geraldine Ferraro, to win re-election.
